Trailer Crushes Two Vigilante Members to Death in Benin City
In a heartbreaking turn of events,
two members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria lost their lives in a fatal
hit-and-run accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 29,
2025, along the bustling stretch in front of the University of Benin (UNIBEN),
Edo State.
According to eyewitnesses, the men
were on a motorcycle when an articulated truck, allegedly speeding toward
Lagos, struck them down with force so brutal that one victim’s head was
completely crushed. The other was later identified as Mustapha through an ID
card found on him.
“The accident happened so fast,
no one even saw it coming,” a nearby hawker recounted. “One moment they
were riding past, the next, they were on the ground lifeless. The trailer
didn’t stop, it just kept going.”
At the time of this report, it
remains unclear whether the vigilante members were attempting to flag down the
trailer before the incident. What is clear, however, is the somber mood the
tragedy has cast over the community.
Spokesperson for the Edo State
Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident and said that more details
would be provided as investigations progress. “It is true that the accident
happened and the men died. We are currently awaiting a full report from the
Divisional Police Officer in the area.”
The remains of the victims have been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) morgue.
