Pope Francis Passes Away at 88
The Catholic Church and millions
around the world are mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who died at the age
of 88. His death was confirmed in an official statement by Cardinal Kevin
Farrell on behalf of the Vatican.
“Dearest brothers and sisters,
with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At
7:35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the
Father,” the statement read.
Cardinal Farrell described Pope
Francis as a devoted servant of God who spent his life championing the Gospel’s
values—fidelity, courage, and love—especially for the poor and the marginalized.
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus,
we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One
and Triune God,” he added.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario
Bergoglio, was elected in 2013, becoming the first Jesuit pope and the first
from Latin America. His papacy was marked by progressive reforms, humility, and
a relentless call for compassion, inclusion, and care for the environment.
Leading up to his death, Pope
Francis had been battling pneumonia and bronchitis. After spending 38 days in
the hospital, he was discharged on March 23, but his health continued to
decline.
His passing marks the end of a
transformative era for the Catholic Church. He leaves behind a legacy of love,
simplicity, and service.
May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
