Tragedy at UBTH: Gunmen Invade Hospital, K!ll Physiotherapist in Cold Blood
A tragic wave of violence hit the
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as gunmen suspected to be cultists
stormed the facility and gunned down a physiotherapist, sending shockwaves
through the medical community.
The attack happened on Friday,
April 25, 2025. The victim, identified as Alex Ogunniyi, was reportedly shot at
close range right within the hospital premises, a place typically associated
with healing not bloodshed.
Eyewitnesses say panic gripped the
hospital instantly. Patients fled in fear while staff scrambled for safety,
unable to believe that such horror could unfold within their sanctuary of care.
In the wake of the killing, UBTH
health workers held a protest on Monday, demanding justice for their fallen
colleague. The protestors called on law enforcement agencies to hunt down the
assailants and ensure greater security for hospital staff both within and
outside the premises.
UBTH’s Public Relations Officer,
Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the tragic incident. “Yes, a physiotherapist was
shot and killed here on Friday. The matter has been reported to the appropriate
security authorities,” he stated.
As investigations begin, grief and
fear now linger in the corridors of UBTH, a stark reminder that even the safest
spaces are not immune to the violence in our society.
