In what sounds more like a scene from an action movie than a courtroom drama, a 38-year-old Nigerian student is making headlines in Malaysia after allegedly biting off a police officer’s ear during an altercation in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur.

Okenyehike Kelvin Obianke, a private college student, appeared before a magistrate’s court on Wednesday, April 30, where he pleaded not guilty to causing grievous harm to Corporal Danielrul Azraq Ahmad Khair, a mobile patrol officer from the Sentul district police headquarters. The incident took place on April 25, outside a clinic in Metro Prima, Kepong.

According to reports, Obianke allegedly bit off a portion of the officer’s left ear during a scuffle that ensued after clinic staff called in a distress report about an aggressive individual behaving erratically on the premises.

While standing before Magistrate S. Mageswary, Obianke who has no legal representation yetclaimed the act wasn’t intentional, stating:

“I am not guilty.”

Under Section 325 of the Penal Code, he faces a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison and a fine if convicted. The court denied him bail and adjourned the matter until June 10 for lawyer appointment and document submission.

But that’s not all.

In a separate courtroom, Obianke also faced two more charges: Illegal entry into Malaysia without valid travel documents. Drug use, specifically for consuming nimetazepam, a controlled substance under local narcotics law.

Both offences allegedly took place on April 25 and 26, respectively. For these, he appeared before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed@Mohamad Saim and once again pleaded not guilty. The next hearing on those charges is scheduled for July 23.

Authorities say the bitten officer’s ear could not be reattached immediately due to the risk of infection. A medical reassessment is ongoing at Kuala Lumpur Hospital to determine if reconstructive surgery will be possible.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa described the event as shocking, confirming that officers were simply responding to a medical facility’s plea for help when things spiraled out of control.
