Court Sentences Late Osinachi’s Husband, Peter Nwachukwu, to Death by Hanging
Two years after the heartbreaking
loss of gospel music star Osinachi Nwachukwu, justice has finally caught up
with her husband, Peter Nwachukwu.
In a landmark ruling today, April
28, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, sentenced
Nwachukwu to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide a
tragic end to a case that gripped the nation.
Delivering the verdict, Justice
Nwosu-Iheme stated that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond
reasonable doubt. Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, facing a
23-count charge brought by the Office of the Attorney-General of the
Federation. These charges ranged from culpable homicide and spousal battery to
cruelty against children and criminal intimidation.
The prosecution’s case was
ironclad, featuring 17 witnesses including two of Osinachi’s children and 25
damning documents tendered as evidence. Nwachukwu, in his defense, called four
witnesses and presented four exhibits but failed to sway the court.
Before the final sentencing, his
lawyer, Reginald Nwali, made a desperate plea for leniency. However, the
prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, firmly urged the court to uphold the
full weight of the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme delivered a
multi-layered judgment: Death by hanging for Count 1 (culpable homicide), Two
years’ imprisonment each for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, Six months’
imprisonment for Count 10, Three years’ imprisonment for Count 11, Fines of
₦500,000 and ₦200,000 for Counts 6 and 7 respectively.
This judgment marks a significant
moment in Nigeria’s fight against domestic violence, serving as a sobering
reminder that no form of abuse will be tolerated — no matter how powerful or
famous the abuser may be.
