CBEX Fraud Suspect Surrenders Voluntarily To EFCC
In a surprising turn of events in
Nigeria’s rapidly unfolding crypto fraud investigation, one of the key figures
linked to the embattled Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX) has voluntarily turned
himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Adefowora Abiodun, one of the eight
individuals declared wanted last week for allegedly orchestrating a staggering
$1 billion investment scam, walked into the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at
approximately 4 p.m. on Monday, April 28. Accompanied by a team of lawyers,
Abiodun expressed readiness to cooperate fully with the anti-graft agency.
The EFCC had secured a court order
from Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, authorizing the arrest and
detention of the CBEX suspects. The judge, citing compelling evidence submitted
by the EFCC, ruled that the application was “meritorious” and approved the
agency’s request.
According to the EFCC, the suspects
were involved in a crypto investment scheme that allegedly duped investors out
of over a billion dollars, sparking nationwide outrage and panic within
Nigeria’s digital finance community.
Speaking on behalf of his client,
legal counsel Babatunde Busari, Esq., stated that Abiodun was turning himself
in to “set the record straight” and challenge the narrative that had
painted him as a fugitive. “He is here to clear his name,” Busari
emphasized.
As the investigation intensifies,
the public and investors alike await further updates from the EFCC on the fate
of the remaining suspects and the possibility of recovering the allegedly
misappropriated funds.
