A viral video showing former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, being lavishly sprayed with money at a public event has stirred a storm online and now, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is weighing in.

Over the weekend, Nigerians flooded social media with reactions, questioning whether EFCC would dare act against Tompolo, who was seen dancing as wads of cash rained around him. Many dared the anti-graft agency to respond, citing the EFCC’s tough stance on the “spraying of naira” at events.

On Monday morning, the EFCC broke its silence with a cryptic but pointed post on its official social media page:

“Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”

The statement signals the Commission's intent to investigate or possibly question the former militant leader over the public display of naira notes an act that violates Nigeria’s currency handling laws.

The public spraying and mishandling of naira has increasingly become a focus for the EFCC. In recent months, the agency has arrested and prosecuted celebrities and event attendees for similar offenses, citing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regulations that prohibit the abuse of the national currency.

While Tompolo has not been officially summoned or charged in connection with the incident, EFCC’s statement has sparked a fresh wave of anticipation online. Nigerians are now watching to see whether the anti-corruption agency will take further steps or if this will be yet another case where influential figures slip through the cracks.
