Nightmare in the Philippines: Nigerian Man Shot Dead at Birthday Party
A birthday celebration meant for joy took a horrific turn in Los Banos,
Laguna, Philippines, in the early hours of yesterday, Monday, May 26, 2025. A
Nigerian national, identified simply as Babylon, was tragically shot dead by a
fellow Nigerian during a violent altercation that has sent shockwaves through
the expatriate community.
The deadly incident occurred at a party hosted by one Obinna, held at a
private residence. What began as a festive gathering quickly devolved into
chaos when a disagreement erupted between two rival groups present at the
venue.
Sources paint a tense scene: one faction of the group had gathered
upstairs, while Babylon and his associates were downstairs. Trouble ignited
when Babylon's group decided to leave and went upstairs to inform the host of
their departure. They were reportedly blocked by members of the rival faction,
leading to a heated argument that rapidly escalated to gunfire.
"At Obinna’s birthday party, one group stayed upstairs while
Babylon’s group was downstairs. When the party ended, Babylon’s group went
upstairs to inform Obinna they were leaving, but the other group blocked their
way," a source recounted to Punch. "An argument broke out, but
Babylon’s group returned downstairs. Shortly after that, a member of the group
that was upstairs rushed downstairs and continued arguing with Babylon’s group.
This escalated into gunfire, during which Babylon was shot in the
process."
Chilling CCTV footage sighted online reportedly shows the moment the
victim was shot, as others present scrambled for safety. Another anonymous
source revealed that Babylon attempted to flee after being shot but collapsed
in a nearby bush close to the compound, succumbing to his injuries. His body
was discovered on the spot later that morning.
The shooter reportedly fled the scene before police arrived. Babylon,
who resided in Manila, had traveled to Laguna specifically for the party,
adding another layer of tragedy to his untimely demise.
While the attack is strongly believed to be cult-related, no arrest has
been made yet. Adding to the distress, concerns have been raised about
Babylon’s corpse, which remains unclaimed since the incident. Efforts are
reportedly underway to contact his wife and children in Nigeria, who are now
left to grapple with this devastating news from thousands of miles away.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly celebrations can
turn tragic, especially when rivalries boil over, and highlights the challenges
faced by expatriate communities abroad.
