Lagos is set to be the epicenter of significant regional and national events this week, as President Bola Tinubu departs Abuja today, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, for a high-profile visit. The President's itinerary includes leading Nigeria's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside other regional leaders, and commissioning a series of crucial federal infrastructure projects.

According to a press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), the Golden Jubilee celebrations, which commenced last month in Accra, Ghana, will continue in Lagos with a rich array of events.

The highlight of the ECOWAS celebration in Lagos will be a symbolic reenactment of the 1975 declaration that established the regional bloc. This historic event will take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island.

President Tinubu, who also serves as the current Chairman of ECOWAS, will deliver a keynote address at a special event at Eko Hotels and Suites, reflecting on the bloc's achievements over half a century. The ceremonies will feature a historical review by Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, followed by an expert panel discussion on the organization's progress.

A particularly poignant moment is expected with the participation of General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving Head of State who signed the original ECOWAS declaration, who will also deliver a speech at Eko Hotels. Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will officially open the Lagos celebrations with a welcome address.

Beyond the ECOWAS festivities, President Tinubu's visit to Lagos is also marked by a strong focus on national development. On Saturday, May 31, 2025, he is scheduled to commission several vital federal infrastructure projects.

These include: Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, The Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, The flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the 7th Axial Road.

Furthermore, the President will virtually inaugurate a host of other crucial road projects across the country, signifying a nationwide push for infrastructure development. These include: The Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road, Yakasai-Zalli Road, The flag-off of the Kano Northern Bypass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.

The President is expected to conclude his Lagos stay by observing the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.

This multi-faceted visit underscores President Tinubu's dual commitment to regional integration and robust national development, marking a busy and significant week for the Nigerian Presidency.
