The Lagos State Police Command is sending a clear, unequivocal message to all residents: you are not required to pay any money when filing a complaint or securing bail at any police station. These payments are illegal, and the command is urging the public to resist and report such demands immediately.

The stern warning came from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Lagos State, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, yesterday, Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Speaking to journalists, Hundeyin addressed persistent reports of extortion by police officers, despite ongoing public awareness campaigns emphasizing that "bail is free."

"People should not succumb to extortion; rather, they should make a formal complaint of officers who demand money for any offence to the state through CRU of the Lagos State Police Command,” Hundeyin stated, emphasizing the crucial role of public cooperation.

He highlighted a success story where a complainant, after being asked for money, called the command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and was subsequently released without payment due to the unit’s swift intervention. "People should learn to take advantage of solutions that the police have made available,” Hundeyin added.

The appeal comes amidst renewed concerns from Lagos residents who continue to encounter officers demanding money for services that should be free. CSP Hundeyin reiterated that such actions are "corrupt and unacceptable." He urged members of the public to refuse any demands for payment and to report the incidents promptly, assuring that the command remains fully committed to accountability and internal discipline within its ranks.

This directive serves as a vital reminder to all Lagosians: knowing your rights is your first line of defense against extortion. The Lagos State Police Command is actively encouraging residents to be vigilant and to utilize the available channels to ensure justice and uphold the integrity of the force.

If you encounter any officer demanding money for bail or to file a complaint, report them to the Lagos State Police Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU).
