Political Firestorm: PDP Headquarters Sealed by FCTA Over Alleged "Unpaid Rent"
Abuja is witnessing fresh political tension today, Monday, May 26, 2025, as the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata Plaza, has been sealed off by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
The FCTA claims the drastic
action is due to an astonishing 28 years of unpaid ground rent. However, the
PDP is not taking it lying down, swiftly condemning the move as a "brazen
abuse of power" by the Federal Government.
The sealing came to light as PDP
leaders converged for an emergency caucus meeting this Monday evening at the
Bauchi Governors’ Lodge in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the party, the acting
National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, expressed profound displeasure,
describing the sealing of their office as a "reckless attempt to
undermine democracy."
Damagum issued a stern warning, indicating that the party is prepared for any further provocations, including potential arrests.
"We will not take this lightly. They could come and
arrest all of us; we are prepared. This is a clear attempt to undermine
democracy, and we will hold them accountable," he declared, his words
ringing with defiance.
He further denounced the government's actions in the strongest possible terms:
"If they are
encouraging such actions, we do not take it lightly. They are attempting to
undermine democracy, and this is completely unacceptable. This is a clear
example of the irresponsibility exhibited by this government. We condemn this
act in the strongest terms. It is a reckless display of irresponsibility, and
we will not tolerate it."
The PDP leader affirmed that the
party would ensure Nigerians are fully aware of the implications of this
contentious act. He assured the public that the party would formulate an
appropriate response once their ongoing deliberations are concluded.
"We have just adjourned
today’s meeting until tomorrow at 10 o’clock. A small committee has been
established to present a report tomorrow morning, and we will resume
discussions from there," Damagum stated, indicating that the political
chess game is far from over.
This incident marks a significant
escalation in the political landscape, sparking a crucial debate about the
boundaries of administrative actions against opposition parties and the
integrity of Nigeria's democratic process.
