The streets of Ibadan recently witnessed a tragedy that has left a father shattered and a community in outrage. Odunayo Alade, a father who had dedicated his life to raising his children against all odds, is now consumed by grief and anger following the fatal shooting of his 15-year-old son, Kehinde Alade.

Kehinde, a bright secondary school student, became an innocent victim when he was reportedly hit by a stray bullet, allegedly fired by a police officer during a high-speed chase near Gbagi Market Road. The pursuit involved police and traffic officials chasing a vehicle suspected of conveying internet fraudsters, commonly known as "Yahoo boys."

In a poignant and tearful account to newsmen, Odunayo Alade recounted the terrifying moments. He was simply driving his children home from school, taking a detour against traffic due to a tire issue. He suddenly found himself in the midst of a chaotic pursuit. "As their towing vehicle hit my car, I manoeuvred and escaped; but the next thing I heard was a gunshot."

The horror unfolded in the backseat. "My son was shouting ‘Daddy, daddy’ in the back seat, but I tried to caution him to keep quiet, as we had left the scene. Unknown to me, the stray bullet hit the boy. It was his twin brother who said: ‘Daddy, stop, Taiwo has been shot’."

Kehinde, who would have turned 14 in November, tragically gave up the ghost at the University College Hospital (UCH). Mr. Alade vehemently stated he was not a suspect and was merely transporting his children.

His pain runs even deeper. Having been separated from his wife for seven years and having personally raised his children, sacrificing opportunities to remarry, he made a promise to give them the best life. Now, that promise is irrevocably broken.

"This cannot go unpunished. I want those responsible to be held accountable. No parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child in such a senseless manner," he pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "Kehinde was a bright boy with dreams and aspirations... and now all of that has been stolen from us."

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Egbetokun has since ordered an investigation into the tragic incident, a small beacon of hope for a father desperate for answers and justice for his beloved son.

Our hearts go out to Mr. Alade and his family during this unimaginable time. What are your thoughts on this tragic loss and the father's plea for justice?
