Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan |
During an interview with Arise
TV on February 28, 2025, Senator Natasha revealed that her issues with
Akpabio began in December 2023 when she visited his hometown in Akwa
Ibom State for an official engagement.
According to her, Akpabio invited her
and her husband to tour his private residence in Uyo, where he allegedly made
an inappropriate suggestion.
"We were all in Akwa
Ibom—my husband, his close friends, and I. First, we were at his house in Ikot
Ekpene before moving to his house in Uyo around 8 PM. He held my hand and said
he wanted to show me around. My husband was behind us, still on his phone. As
we walked from room to room, he suddenly hastened his pace while still holding
my hand."
She said Akpabio then asked if she
liked his house, and after she complimented it, he allegedly made a shocking
statement:
"Now that you are a
senator, I am going to create time for us to come and spend quality time
together. You will enjoy it."
Natasha recalled feeling stunned
and pulling back, unsure of what she had just heard. Her husband, sensing
something was off, later asked her about the conversation.
“My husband asked, ‘Natasha,
what did the Senate President tell you?’ I was unsure whether to tell him the
truth or just mask it because he truly admires Akpabio and sees him as a
brother.”
Senator Natasha further claimed
that after rejecting Akpabio’s advances, he began frustrating her efforts in
the Senate, particularly her motion on the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company.
“I listed my motion on Ajaokuta
Steel five times, and each time, before he took it, he would say, ‘Senator
Natasha, we can’t take this motion because the mood of the Senate doesn’t
accommodate it.’ It wasn’t until the sixth time that it was finally taken.”
She said several senators advised
her to “plead” with Akpabio to allow her motion, but when she confronted
him in his office, he allegedly said:
"Natasha, I am the Chief
Presiding Officer of the Senate. You can enjoy a whole lot—make me happy."
The feud between Akpabio and
Natasha became public last week when they had a heated exchange in the Senate
chamber over seating arrangements. During the altercation, Akpabio told her to
“behave herself” because the Senate was “not a nightclub.”
Addressing the remark in her
interview, Natasha said it was not a slip of the tongue but a deliberate jab
because of a previous private conversation where Akpabio had allegedly
discussed “nightclub fun” with her.
Senator Natasha challenged
Akpabio to publicly share his own side of the story and address the
allegations.
As the controversy unfolds,
Nigerians are left waiting for Akpabio’s response, while the political drama
between the two senators continues to escalate.
