LASTMA Official's Leg Crushed by Reckless Trailer Driver(Photos)

A tragic incident unfolded at the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos on Tuesday, February 5, when a reckless trailer driver rammed into an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), crushing his leg in the process.

According to an official statement from LASTMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated trailer, bearing Bauchi State registration number KTG 33 ZZ, was en route from Agidingbi via Oba Ogunji Road to Omole Junction in the Ogba corridor when the driver, speeding uncontrollably, lost control and caused a devastating crash.

The impact of the collision left the LASTMA officer with severe injuries, including a fractured right leg and hand. He was rushed to the Surgical Emergency Centre at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where doctors determined that the extent of his injuries required an immediate amputation of his right leg.

In an attempt to evade justice, the trailer driver fled the scene. However, through the swift intervention of security operatives from the Ojodu Police Station, working in collaboration with vigilant LASTMA officials, he was tracked down and arrested.

Following the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the injured officer at LASUTH and strongly condemned the reckless actions of the trailer driver. He emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided had the driver exercised caution and adhered to road safety protocols.

He urged trailer and truck operators, along with all motorists, to prioritize safety, reminding them of the priceless value of human life.

"LASTMA officers are not adversaries to motorists; rather, they are committed to ensuring smooth traffic flow, which is essential for economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos State," he stated.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also expressed deep sympathy for the injured officer and wished him a swift recovery, reaffirming LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to road safety and orderliness across Lagos highways.
