"I'M BACK! Obasa Returns as Speaker Amidst Leadership Tussle
The former Speaker of the Lagos
State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has announced his return to power,
claiming that he has resumed his position as Speaker despite being impeached
on January 13.
Obasa made this declaration on Thursday,
February 27, 2025, after arriving at the Lagos Assembly complex for the first
time since his removal. He was escorted by a team of heavily armed police
officers and operatives from the State Security Service (SSS).
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the
Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa stated confidently after storming the
Assembly building.
Obasa was impeached in January
by an overwhelming majority of lawmakers, who accused him of gross
misconduct and abuse of office. Following his removal, Mojisola Lasbat
Meranda was sworn in as the first female Speaker of the Lagos
Assembly.
His sudden return has sparked political
tension within the Assembly, raising questions about the legality of his
claims and the next steps in the ongoing leadership tussle.
The dramatic turn of events has
left Lagos residents and political observers wondering whether Obasa’s declaration
will hold legal weight or if the Assembly will move to challenge his
actions.
As the crisis unfolds, all eyes
remain on the Lagos State government, lawmakers, and legal authorities
to determine the legitimacy of Obasa’s claim and the stability of the
legislative house.
