Tragedy Strikes as Five Uniosun Students, Four Others Die in Ife-Ibadan Expressway Crash
A fatal road accident along the Ife-Ibadan
Expressway has claimed the lives of five students from Osun State University
(Uniosun), Osogbo, along with four other victims.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday,
March 23, 2025, around the Balogun area in Ikire. Reports from the Nigeria
Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) revealed that the accident
happened due to a head-on collision between a bus coming from Ibadan and an 18-passenger
bus that departed from Osogbo.
In a statement on Monday, the Public
Relations Officer of Uniosun, Ademola Adesoji, confirmed the heartbreaking
news, noting that the university immediately dispatched a response team to the
scene.
He further confirmed the identities
of the deceased students: Olagbemide Dotun (200-level, Software Engineering), Suleiman
Farouq Adedayo (400-level, Law), Ogundare Pelumi (300-level, Public Health), Ogundare
Elijah (100-level, Mechanical Engineering) and Olawuyi Mary (200-level,
Nursing).
However, one student, Olagbemide
Damilola (200-level, Medicine and Surgery), survived the crash and is currently
receiving medical attention.
The statement further noted that the
total number of fatalities confirmed by the police stood at 10, including other
passengers involved in the accident.
"This tragic loss has
deeply shaken our university community," the university said. "Our
thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased. We
urge our students, staff, and the entire university community to remain calm
and supportive during this difficult time."
The Osun State University pledged
to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to affected families.
