Adamawa and Taraba Customs Seize ₦72.6 Million Worth of Petrol Bound for Cameroon
The Adamawa and Taraba Customs
Command has intercepted a massive shipment of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),
commonly known as petrol, worth over ₦72.6 million, preventing its illegal
export to Cameroon.
The seizure is part of the
command’s ongoing crackdown on smuggling, aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s
economy and securing its territorial borders.
Speaking at a press briefing in
Yola, the Customs Comptroller, Garba Bashir, revealed that the intercepted
petrol was being transported via the River Benue waterways.
“Our operatives have once again
struck a heavy blow against smugglers through intelligence sharing, technology,
and coordinated border management,” Bashir stated.
He emphasized that under his
leadership, the Adamawa and Taraba Customs Command would remain a no-go zone
for smugglers.
“We have started strangling
smugglers, and we will continue to suffocate them until smuggling is completely
eradicated from the command,” he vowed.
Customs operatives raided the
Jimeta Waterside, popularly known as Bakin Kogi, around 3:30 a.m., where they
discovered: 240 drums of petrol, each containing 220 litres, Petrol strategically
arranged and ready to be smuggled across the waterways to Cameroon.
Bashir issued a stern warning to
those involved in illegal trade, urging them to abandon smuggling and embrace
legitimate business ventures.
“To smugglers and economic
saboteurs, I urge you to forsake illicit trade. The Nigeria Customs Service is
committed to facilitating legal trade and cracking down on smuggling cartels to
protect our national economy,” he warned.
