The Rivers State Government has expressed deep shock and disappointment over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while leaving Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, untouched—despite his alleged role in the ongoing political crisis in the state.

In a statement issued by Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the government described the state of emergency declaration as unjust, arguing that Governor Fubara has consistently upheld constitutional order, peace, and good governance despite political turbulence in the state.

“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson stated.

The commissioner emphasized that Governor Fubara has remained committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring the steady progress of Rivers State. He added that, despite political instability, the governor has prioritized the interests of Rivers people over personal or political considerations.

The statement recalled that President Tinubu personally intervened in the Rivers political crisis, after which Governor Fubara faithfully implemented the agreed peace terms, including: Reinstating commissioners who resigned during the crisis, Complying with the Supreme Court’s ruling to restore stability and Avoiding political retaliation despite continued opposition

However, despite these efforts, lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike continued to frustrate peace efforts in the state. Johnson questioned why Fubara was removed while Wike, allegedly the key figure in the crisis, remained untouched.

Despite the shocking turn of events, the Rivers State Government has called on residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, reaffirming its commitment to engaging with relevant institutions to ensure democracy is upheld.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson stated.

The government assured the people of Rivers State that it would continue to prioritize their well-being, security, and prosperity as it navigates the rapidly unfolding political situation.
