Jailbreak in Kogi: 12 Inmates Escape from Federal Correctional Centre
A jailbreak occurred at the Federal
Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, on the morning of March 24,
leading to the escape of 12 inmates.
The Kogi State Commissioner for
Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the escape, describing it as “unfortunate.”
He assured the public that the government, in collaboration with security
agencies, is working to prevent a recurrence.
According to Fanwo, one of the
escaped inmates has already been re-arrested.
Authorities are puzzled by how the
prisoners escaped through the tower without causing structural damage. Fanwo
emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover: How the escape
happened, who might be responsible for security lapses and whether there were
insiders aiding the escape.
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo,
has instructed security agencies to ensure that such a breach does not happen
again.
“We call on the public to report
any suspicious individuals in their communities,” Fanwo urged. He warned
that anyone caught harboring an escaped inmate will face legal consequences.
While assuring residents that there
is no cause for panic, the government reassured citizens that safety remains a
top priority.
