Sowore: Why Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers Makes Me Happy
Activist Omoyele Sowore has shared
his thoughts on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of
emergency in Rivers State, stating that he welcomes the decision for an
unexpected reason.
On Tuesday, President Tinubu
declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending all democratically elected
officials in the state. The move has been met with widespread criticism from
Nigerians. By Wednesday, Tinubu had sworn in Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the
sole administrator of the state.
Speaking on Channels Television
on Thursday, March 20, Sowore explained that while he is not defending any
political figures in Rivers, he believes the crisis could be a catalyst for
change.
“To be clear, I am not here to
defend godfather and son. I don’t care about them. I hope they destroy
themselves.”
Sowore went on to say that the
unfolding events might finally push Nigerians to demand a revolution.
“I am happy because maybe this
is going to force Nigerians across the country to wake up. They have been too
complicit, docile as a result of cowardice.
“It will force Nigerians to
complete the 30-day challenge and move on to the stage where there will be a
complete revolt. That is not me saying I love anarchy, but I love justice.”
