NYSC Members Rejoice!: FG Promises to Pay Backlog N77,000 Allowance
The Federal Government has
reassured National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members that they will receive
the backlog of their increased monthly allowance of ₦77,000, which has been
delayed since its announcement.
On September 25, 2024, the
government announced an increase in the monthly stipend for corps members from ₦33,000
to ₦77,000. However, despite several assurances, the implementation of the new
allowance is yet to begin.
The delay has caused frustration
among corps members, with one individual recently going viral after lamenting
the financial struggles of living on ₦33,000 per month.
Following the public outcry, the
newly appointed Director General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, announced that
the revised allowance would take effect by March 2025.
In a fresh assurance, Minister of
Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed that corps members—both those
currently serving and those in the scheme when the increment was announced—will
receive backdated payments.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics
Today on March 24, 2025, Olawande reaffirmed the government’s commitment to
settling the backlog.
He stated: “The
new NYSC DG has assured corps members that they will receive their payments.”
“For those who have already completed
service, we have your details, and you will be paid.”
While confirming that the delayed
stipends will be paid, Olawande cautioned that the payments may not be
immediate, but the government is actively working on resolving the issue.
“The backlog, we will work on it and make
sure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen.”
As corps members continue to wait
for the official rollout of the new ₦77,000 stipend, they remain hopeful that
the government will honor its promise and ensure all arrears are cleared.
