Governor Fubara Urges Calm After Tinubu’s State of Emergency Declaration in Rivers
Governor Siminilayi Fubara has
called on the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful and law-abiding
following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the
state.
President Tinubu made the controversial
decision on Tuesday, March 18, citing prolonged political tensions, including
impeachment attempts against Governor Fubara. The declaration led to the appointment
of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator, effectively suspending Fubara,
his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.
In response, Governor Fubara issued
a statement on Wednesday, March 19, reaffirming his commitment to constitutional
governance and the welfare of Rivers residents despite the ongoing crisis.
"Even in the face of the
political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the
rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else," Fubara
stated.
Fubara emphasized that his
administration had respected the peace agreements brokered by the Presidency,
including reinstating resigned commissioners and implementing the Supreme
Court’s judgment to restore normalcy. However, he accused the Rivers State
House of Assembly of obstructing efforts to achieve lasting peace.
"We took these steps not
for personal gain but to foster peace, unity, and stability in our dear state.
Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly
frustrated our efforts, making genuine peace and progress difficult."
Despite political tensions, Fubara
reassured citizens that governance had continued under his leadership.
"Yes, we have political
disagreements, but salaries have been paid, critical projects are ongoing, and
Rivers State remains safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch."
As Rivers State faces this unprecedented
political turmoil, Governor Fubara urged residents to stay calm, remain
law-abiding, and trust in democratic institutions to resolve the crisis.
"At this critical time, I
urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful. We will engage with all relevant
institutions to ensure our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State
continues to thrive."
