Mother and Daughter Sentenced for Stealing Stockfish, Ponmo, and Dried Meat in Ogun
A magistrates' court in Isabo,
Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced a woman, Falitatu Amidu, and her daughter,
Ayisatu, for stealing a sack of stockfish, dry ponmo, and cow meat worth N1
million, belonging to a trader, Mrs. Kafayat Alao.
The duo, who reside at No. 21
Ago-Oko, Abeokuta, were convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and
theft.
According to police prosecutor,
Inspector Kehinde Fawunmi, the incident occurred in August 2024 at Lafenwa
Market. Falitatu Amidu, who used to assist the complainant in transporting
goods from her store to her stall, was entrusted with picking up the stock.
However, she vanished with the items.
“The complainant waited for over
an hour but did not see the defendant, prompting her to check the store," Fawunmi
said.
"Upon arrival, she found
that Falitatu was missing, along with a large bag containing dried meat, ponmo,
and stockfish."
Investigations revealed that
Falitatu had stolen the goods and handed them over to her daughter, Ayisatu, to
sell, despite knowing they were stolen.
The prosecution argued that their
actions violated Sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Criminal Code Laws of
Ogun State, 2006.
Delivering her judgment, Magistrate
O.O. Odumosu ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable
doubt.
As a result, both mother and
daughter were sentenced to six months in prison, with an option of a N5,000
fine. Additionally, they were ordered to refund N100,000 each to the
complainant as restitution before being eligible to pay the fine.
