Rivers State Emergency: President Tinubu Applauds National Assembly's Decision
President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its swift and patriotic approval of the State of Emergency in Rivers State, calling it a crucial step toward restoring stability after a prolonged political crisis.
In a statement issued on Thursday,
March 20, and signed by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised
the leadership of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and House of
Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, along with other lawmakers, for
prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers residents over partisan
interests.
The President emphasized that the 15-month-long
crisis in Rivers State had crippled governance, threatened national economic
security, and put vital oil and gas infrastructure at risk.
"The crisis in Rivers State
was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas
installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress
we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May
2023," Tinubu stated.
He noted that the emergency
declaration was necessary to prevent further escalation of violence and
instability.
President Tinubu affirmed that the six-month
State of Emergency will allow the newly appointed Sole Administrator to: Stabilize
governance in Rivers State, address systemic failures, facilitate dialogue
among conflicting parties and secure critical infrastructure.
He assured Nigerians that his
administration remains committed to collaborating with the National Assembly to
promote peace, economic resilience, and national development.
The President concluded by
stressing the importance of unity among Nigeria’s leaders in tackling
challenges.
"Today’s decision
exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism
guide the action of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more
prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured."
