INEC Moves Forward with Natasha's Recall: Petitioners' Contact Details Confirmed, Natasha Notified
The Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has now received the missing contact
addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of the representatives of
petitioners seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi
Central in the Senate.
This update follows INEC’s earlier
announcement on Wednesday, March 26, where it acknowledged receiving the recall
petition but declined to process it due to incomplete requirements. The
electoral body had stated that the petitioners’ representatives failed to
provide their contact details, which is a necessary requirement under Clause
1(f) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines.
However, in a statement released on
Wednesday, March 26, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information
& Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed that the missing
details have now been provided in a letter addressed to the INEC Chairman.
The statement reads:
"Further to the statement
issued yesterday, Wednesday 26th March 2025, the Commission hereby confirms
that the contact address of representatives of the petitioners, their telephone
numbers, and e-mail addresses have now been provided in a letter addressed to
the Chairman of the Commission dated Wednesday 26th March 2025."
Following this development, INEC
has taken the following steps: A letter has been sent to notify Senator
Akpoti-Uduaghan about the petition. The same letter has been copied to the
presiding officer of the Senate and published on INEC’s website. INEC will now scrutinize
the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to verify whether it meets
the requirement of over 50% of registered voters in the constituency.
INEC assured Nigerians that the process
will be transparent and open, and the outcome of the verification will be made
public in the coming days.
