Actress Lilian Afegbai Reacts to Outrageous Asoebi Prices Sold in Dollars
Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai
has expressed her shock and disappointment over the rising trend of selling Asoebi
(traditional wedding attire) in dollars rather than Naira.
In a video shared on Instagram,
Afegbai recounted her experience after receiving a wedding invitation that
required guests to purchase Asoebi for $1,200.
Initially, she assumed the price
was in Naira but was stunned when she noticed the dollar sign attached. She
questioned the logic behind spending millions of Naira on an outfit that would
likely be worn only once.
"They have started selling
Asoebi in dollars in Lagos. Someone invited me to a wedding, and I saw 1,200. I
was happy, thinking things were changing. Then I blinked and saw the dollar
sign! I quickly grabbed my phone to calculate 1,200 x 1,600—how many millions
is that for Asoebi I’ll wear just once?"
Her reaction has sparked
conversations online, with many Nigerians sharing similar frustrations about the
increasing commercialization of Asoebi culture and the extravagant demands
placed on wedding guests.
