Burnt Body Found in Anambra Waste Dumpsite
Tragedy struck in Iyiowa Odekpe,
Anambra State, on Tuesday, May 7, when police officers on patrol made a
chilling discovery a burnt corpse dumped in a waste site. The body is believed
to be that of a man allegedly caught stealing car batteries with a gang before
being lynched and set ablaze by an angry mob.
According to preliminary police
investigations, the deceased was part of a group known for targeting vehicles
and stealing their batteries. Reports indicate that while his accomplices
managed to flee the scene, the suspect wasn’t so lucky. The mob, acting in
fury, took justice into their own hands, resulting in a gruesome end for the
alleged thief.
Speaking on the incident, the
spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga,
confirmed the discovery and strongly condemned the mob action. He quoted
Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu as urging the public to refrain from taking
the law into their own hands, regardless of the crime alleged.
"Resorting to jungle
justice not only undermines the rule of law but could also lead to tragic
errors and the loss of innocent lives," CP Orutugu stated.
The police are continuing
investigations into the matter and are calling on residents to report any
criminal activity directly to law enforcement for proper investigation and
prosecution.
