Akpabio Heads to Court Over Senator Natasha’s Satirical Apology
The political tension in Nigeria’s
upper legislative chamber just got more theatrical, Senate President Godswill
Akpabio is dragging fellow senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to court over a
sarcastic social media post that’s causing legal ripples.
The bone of contention? A satirical
“apology” Natasha posted on April 27, where she mockingly said she was
sorry “for the crime of maintaining dignity and self-respect,”
accompanied by a video. While the post may have earned chuckles online, it has
landed her in hot water legally. Akpabio claims the move flouted a standing
court order that barred both senators from discussing their ongoing legal
dispute in public.
Akpabio, through his legal team led
by SAN Kehinde Ogunwumiju, wants the Federal High Court in Abuja to compel
Akpoti-Uduaghan to delete the post across all her social media platforms. But
that’s not all, he’s also demanding a public apology published in at least two
national newspapers and a sworn affidavit proving she’s played by the rules.
The tension between both lawmakers
dates back to a dramatic Senate clash over seating arrangements that spiraled
into something far more serious. After accusing the Senate President of sexual
harassment, Senator Natasha was suspended, and a legal storm has since
followed.
As Nigerians watch the legal saga
unfold, one thing is certain this political drama has all the ingredients of a
blockbuster: power, courtroom battles, and the ever-watchful eye of social
media.
