Simon Ekpa’s Extradition on Hold: FG Says Finland Has the First Say
The Federal Government has finally
opened up about why controversial Biafran political activist Simon Ekpa has not
been extradited to Nigeria and the reason lies beyond local borders.
Speaking on Thursday, May 8, Attorney-General
of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN),
clarified that Ekpa is currently entangled in legal proceedings in Finland,
where he was arrested and detained. Until that legal battle plays out, Nigeria
will have to wait its turn.
“Simon Ekpa has committed
cross-border offences,” Fagbemi said. “He broke laws in both Finland and
Nigeria. The Finnish authorities are currently handling his case and have made
it clear they will release him to us only after they’re done with their own
legal processes.”
The update came during a media chat
on the sidelines of an event in Abuja, where the AGF also emphasized the
importance of respecting international legal procedures especially when
multiple countries are involved in criminal charges.
Ekpa, a self-styled Biafran agitator and separatist broadcaster, has been at the center of international controversy over his actions and rhetoric. His arrest in Finland drew attention globally, particularly in Nigeria where he's been accused of inciting unrest.
