"No Award, But God Gave Me Grace" — Portable Speaks Out After Headies Snub
Nigerian street-pop sensation Portable
is once again making headlines not for controversy this time, but for speaking
his truth about feeling overlooked by the Nigerian music industry.
Days after the glitzy Headies
Awards ceremony wrapped up, Portable took to his Instagram story to vent about
being snubbed by the award show despite his growing influence in the street
music scene.
"Dem no give us award, but
God give us grace," he wrote, a mix of humility and shade in his usual
unapologetic style.
According to the singer, he was actually
invited to perform at the event but couldn’t make it because he was in police
custody for five days. In a sarcastic tone, he questioned, in Yoruba:
“So if I had shown up to
perform, I still wouldn’t have received any award?”
Despite the perceived slight,
Portable didn’t dwell in bitterness. In the same breath, he counted his
blessings mentioning he just bought a brand-new car and is still making money
regardless of the industry’s recognition.
“Award or not, I dey cash out.
God don bless me,” he added, in Yoruba.
Whether or not the awards recognize
him, one thing is clear Portable remains unfazed and firmly rooted in the
belief that grace trumps validation.
