EFCC To Grant VDM Bail After Questioning, Reveals Reason for Arrest
After days of swirling speculation,
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally addressed the
controversy surrounding the arrest of outspoken social media personality, Martins
Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
In a statement released on Monday
morning, the anti-graft agency clarified that VDM’s detention was the result of
multiple petitions relating to serious financial misconduct, and not as widely
rumored due to his vocal criticisms of the commission’s work.
“Martins Innocent Otse was
invited over a series of petitions bordering on alleged financial crimes.
Despite several invitations, he failed to appear. His arrest became necessary
and lawful,” the EFCC stated.
According to the commission, while
they are aware of VDM’s frequent verbal jabs at their operations, they insisted
that those had no bearing on the decision to take him into custody.
“His arrest was not influenced
by his commentary. The EFCC operates by law and obtained a valid Remand Order
for his detention,” the agency emphasized.
The commission further revealed
that VDM has now been granted administrative bail, pending the fulfillment of
his bail conditions, and reassured the public that due process is being
followed.
EFCC urged Nigerians to allow the agency to perform its duties without undue speculation or interference, promising that once investigations are complete, charges will be appropriately filed if necessary.
